Why you should write your politician about life-saving diabetes treatments

Living With Diabetes

BCDiabetes is actively lobbying with Pharmacare to cover a number of life-saving therapies and devices. At the top of our list is the SGLT2 inhibitor class of medication: see this video made with Diabetes Canada & previous blogs here, here and here. SGLT2 inhibitors are covered in every Canadian province except BC. In the 2019-Feb budget $42M in new funding was announced for conditions including diabetes but nothing has yet happened.

Almost all 400,000 British Columbians living with Type 2 diabetes stand to benefit from SGLT2 inhibitor therapy: these drugs lower sugar and weight and do so safely without the risk of low blood sugar.  And the 100,000 British Columbians living with Type 2 diabetes who have a history of heart disease or diabetes-related kidney disease stand to have their lives saved by using this class of medication through a reduction in risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure, while helping to preserve kidney function.

But many people with diabetes can’t afford the $3 per day cost and BC is the only province in Canada that asks patients to pay for these treatments out of pocket.

BCDiabetes believes that British Columbians with diabetes deserve the same rights, and equal access to life-saving medication, as other Canadians.
